About this procedure
An upper endoscopy (EGD) lets a doctor see the inside of your esophagus, stomach, and the top of your small intestine using a flexible camera passed through your mouth.
What to expect
You'll fast for at least 6-8 hours beforehand. With sedation the exam takes 15-30 minutes; expect to be at the facility for 2-3 hours total. Common reasons for the test: ongoing heartburn, swallowing problems, or unexplained stomach pain. You'll need a ride home.
