About this procedure
A flexible sigmoidoscopy — a shorter version of a colonoscopy that examines the lower third of the colon. Used for rectal bleeding workup or as a less-invasive screening option.
What to expect
10-20 minutes, usually without sedation. Bowel prep is much lighter than for a full colonoscopy (often just an enema 1-2 hours before). Some discomfort and bloating during the exam. Doesn't replace a full colonoscopy if any polyps are found — those require the full procedure.
