About this procedure

Cataract surgery — removes the cloudy lens of the eye and replaces it with an artificial one. The most common surgery in the US.

What to expect

Outpatient, 15-30 minutes per eye. Local anesthesia and light sedation; you're awake but won't feel pain. Vision typically improves within a day. Eye drops for 4 weeks. Each eye is usually done 1-2 weeks apart. Medicare and most insurance cover the basic procedure.
