About this procedure

A CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis without contrast — fast cross-sectional imaging used for kidney stones, appendicitis screening, and abdominal pain.

What to expect

Takes 5-10 minutes once you're on the table. No IV in the without-contrast version. You'll lie on a table that slides through a donut-shaped scanner. Hold your breath for a few seconds at a time when prompted. Radiation dose is meaningful — discuss alternatives with your doctor if you've had several recent CTs.
